Once upon a time there was the South Beach Diet which started regionally and has grown into a nationwide and quite possibly, a worldwide phenomenon. Like all stories, there is good and evil or bad. On diet there are good fats and bad fats and good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. If you can separate the good from the bad, you’re bound to add happy and healthy chapters to your life through the fast and easy weight loss program.

So what’s the skinny? What can I eat on the South Beach Diet? 

The first two weeks is the strictest phase but you can still eat normal size helpings of meat, poultry, fish, and shellfish; plenty of vegetables, eggs, cheese, and nuts; real olive oil in your salad dressing, and coffee, tea, and lots of water.  

That sounds good but what can’t I eat?  

For the first 14 days you won’t be able to eat bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, or fruit. And no sodas or alcoholic beverages including wine. No candy, cookies, donuts, or sugar of any kind.  

I’m a sugar freak; how can I stand to be on the South Beach Diet? 

The first two days will be challenging but after that your cravings will disappear because the diet doesn’t have the triggers that enhance your sugar and carbohydrate cravings.

What kind of results can I expect from phase 1 or the first 14 days of the diet?

As I said above, you can expect your urges to dissipate. You can also expect to lose between 8-13 pounds with the initial weight disappearing from your middle. On so many diets, you loose weight in your face first but on the South Beach Diet, you lose the initial weight from around your middle and can tell the difference in your clothes instantly. 

I’m overweight and diabetes runs in my family, would the South Beach Diet be a good choice for me? 

Absolutely. Diabetes is caused by the inability of your body to properly process sugars and fats. By choosing good carbs and good fats, your body receives fuel instead of over processing bad fats and carbs. Your blood chemistry produces a balanced amount of insulin instead of flooding the liver with fatty acids.  

After phase 1, can I eat pasta and fruit and chocolate? 

Yes and no. You can eat them occasionally but not all the time. You will have to pick and choose which ones you want as they will be considered indulgences on the diet.

So what’s the gimmick of the South Beach Diet?

There is no gimmick. By altering the way you eat and eliminating bad fats and bad carbs, you will change your blood chemistry which significantly enhances your cardiovascular system. So, as you eat right and lose weight, you significantly improve your odds of living better and longer. 

I went on vacation and went overboard in the eating and drinking department, am I doomed on the South Beach Diet? 

No, this diet is a forgiving one. We consider the human factor of overindulgence and that’s the beauty of the diet. You can slip into a more stringent phase to stabilize when you overdo. No need to walk the plank and beg for forgiveness.

What’s for dessert?  

On phase 1, sugar-free gelatin that comes in fruity flavors. Another is creamy low fat ricotta cheese mixed with a few teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, some slivered almonds, and sugar substitute. Think tiramisu without the jolt.  

On phase 2, sugar-free puddings, strawberries with fat-free whipped topping, cantaloupe with mint, baked apple, fresh pear with ricotta cheese and walnuts.

I like bananas in my cereal. Can I eat that on the South Beach Diet? 

Originally bananas were dismissed as terrible because of their fructose content. However, current thinking cannot judge a food solely by the glycemic index and other factors like nutrients are being considered: Bananas are full of fiber and rich in vitamins C, B6, and potassium -- all providing heart-healthy benefits. Just pare down your portion size to 4-ounces and the incredibly, edible banana is now acceptable on Phase 2 of the South Beach Diet.   

What can I eat on phase 3 of the SouthBeach Diet? 

This is maintenance. Phase 3 is when you’ve reached your weight loss goal and want to spend the rest of your life enjoying a new, healthier you. Phase 3 is liberal. There is no food list to follow. If you want it – eat it – but in moderation. If you slip and slide, go back to phase 2 for reinforcement.
