• Hypoglycemia Diet

Hypoglycemia is when your blood glucose levels drop too low. Though normally associated with diabetics, people without diabetes 1 or 2 may also occasionally suffer from hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include irritability, chills and clamminess, nervousness, hunger, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, light headedness, and blurred vision. No, you’re just not having a bad day – something is very wrong. Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting on any diet.

• Frequently Asked Questions about a  Hypoglycemic / Low Sugar Diet

 How do I avoid hypoglycemia?

Eating the proper diet with the correct combination of exchanges and portion sizes is extremely important to balance your body’s blood glucose levels. Also don’t drink alcohol on an empty stomach, don’t skip meals or snacks, and be sure to keep a snack pack within reach especially after exercising.

What would be a proper snack after exercising?

A slice of whole grain bread with a little peanut butter and half an apple or plain yogurt with apple slices sprinkled with one teaspoon of crushed almonds or low fat cream cheese with tomato slices on whole grain crackers.

 What is an exchange?

An exchange is a serving of the food groups used by the American Diabetes Association.

 What are the food groups?

The food groups are starch/bread, meat and meat substitutes, vegetables, fruits, milk, and fat. The most important feature of the hypoglycemic diet is balancing food so absorption into the blood stream is slow and steady.

Most popular diets forbid carbohydrates. Can I eat them on the hypoglycemic diet?

Absolutely. You’re encouraged to eat complex carbohydrates such as fiber-rich breads made from whole grains, whole cereals and old-fashion oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, barley and quinoa, vegetables, and legumes.

If I have low blood sugar, does that mean I can eat candy and drink soda pop?

No. Foods with high sugar wreck havoc on proper blood glucose levels and diabetic maintenance.

What’s the immediate antidote if I do happen to experience the above systems?

Eat a few pieces of hard candy, two teaspoons of brown or white sugar, one tablespoon honey, ½ can regular soda (not sugar-free) or ½ cup of orange juice.

I like a glass of wine with dinner. Do I have to give it up?

Optimally yes but that’s a good question to ask your doctor. If you do drink wine, don’t drink it every night and wait until there is some food in your stomach. Also consider making a wine cooler with 2-oz. wine and 4-oz. sparkling water.

How much weight will I lose on the hypoglycemia diet?

If you limit your portions or exchanges; and choose fish, chicken and turkey, skim milk and low fat products, the weight will come off. Your first goal is too manage diabetes and prevent low blood sugar.
